大家都知道，husband有“丈夫”的意思。

husband由词根hus-和-band构成。
hus-，即house，房子
-band 源自古英语-bondi“户主，居住者”
结合后这个词的含义就是“房子里的户主”“一家之主”的意思。
也就是说，起初，husband并不单指男性，只要是“一家之主”都可称“husband”。
不过父系社会中，一家之主一般是男性，所以“husband”后来就成了“丈夫”的专称。
那么作为“一家之主”，必须勤俭持家才能维持整个家庭的生存，所以husband同时也有“节俭管理；节俭使用”的意思。
